Teen Charged in Milan Murder Appears in Court

People are still visiting Charlie Reagan’s beloved muffler shop in Milan. What has become a memorial is the same site that police said Reagan was stabbed four times by a 17-year-old boy, June 16. “I feel sorry for the boy that was involved that did that to Charlie,” said Barbara Slegal, one of Reagan’s regular customers. Officials were very careful about who they let in and out of the doors leading to juvenile court in Gibson County. On Monday, the 17-year-old made his first appearance before a judge. But court officials remained tight lipped about exactly what happened during the hearing, everyone but District Attorney General Garry Brown. “He’s charged with first degree murder,” said Brown. “A man lost his life for no good reason.” Brown said he is patiently waiting to take the case to the next level. He said the teen has been ordered to be held in detention for the duration of the case, but Brown said he wants more. He wants to try him as an adult. “Well, one reason is of course the seriousness of the charge. He is charged with first degree murder, which is the most serious charge. And the other reason, he’s 17-years-old, almost an adult,” explained Brown. Brown believes the teen must pay an adult price if convicted of taking Reagan’s life. “He’ll probably be sent to be evaluated and after that evaluation, [we’ll decide] whether or not to transfer him as an adult to circuit court,” he added. In about 30 days, the teen will face the juvenile court judge once again. If and when the case is moved to circuit court, the teen’s name will be made public, but until that time we will not release the suspect’s name.
