Fireworks Stands Defend Against Thieves

Fireworks stands are starting to pop up throughout West Tennessee as we get closer to the Fourth of July, but how do the vendors keep track of all their explosive items? One owner, Debbie Gaugh of Medina, said she just opened up Thursday night and was robbed by three men right before her very eyes. She told us it is incidents like that that keep fireworks vendors on their guard at all time. At her family-owned stand, someone is there 24 hours a day, even sleeping in the tent overnight. It is also common for the vendors to keep some time of firearm close by just in case they are ever threatened at work. “We’re in a position where we’re dealing with everyone from small kids to thieves so you don’t wanna scare anyone but at the same time you have to thing about your safety so we stay armed at our tent,” said Gaugh. Thankfully Gaugh said she has never felt the need to use her handgun. Chief Chad Lowery also told us officers in Medina will check in on their local fireworks stands several times a day.
