If your child attends elementary school in the Jackson-Madison County School System, they will be greeted with some healthier snack choices this fall. The eight elementary school and the Whitehall Pre-K Center will get fresh fruit and veggie snacks, two to three times a day. The snacks are part of a USDA program that allows fruit and vegetables to be eaten outside of lunch. To get the snack program, schools had to commit to promoting the fresh vegetable and fruit of the week. Schools will also teach about the nutritional values of those healthy foods. Last year, the fresh snacks were only in four area elementary schools.
