Carriage House Drive to be closed for construction

JACKSON, Tenn. — Repairs to Carriage House Drive will force a week-long detour beginning Wednesday morning. About 50 feet of Carriage House Drive will be closed on the North Highland side while repairs to a nearly $400,000 project are made. Jackson city engineer Scott Chandler said up to 12,000 drivers use Carriage House Drive every day. Chandler said the only other street large enough to accommodate that many drivers is Old Hickory Boulevard. The construction is to repair a rusted pipe running underneath that must be replaced before winter. “We wanted to go on and get then done before a storm was to cause a collapse or anything,” Chandler said. Chandler said they started informing drivers Monday about the closure. “We’re trying to emphasize the through traffic part because we’re not telling people that the whole area of carriage house is closed,” Chandler said. The city wants drivers to know that during week long road closure all business on Carriage House Drive will still be accessible. “We’re really trying to advise motorists that really are not doing business on Carriage House Drive to use Old Hickory Boulevard as a detour route,” Chandler said. Chandler said if you need to get to a location near where the pipe is being replaced then a detour will be necessary. Wiley Parker Road and Wallace Road can both be used to access Carriage House Drive. Gold’s Gym is one of the main businesses affected. “We understand the repairs need to be made the timing however with the holidays,” accounts manager Samantha Hollingsworth said. The owner of a Citgo convenience store also thinks his business will slow down. “I wish it already been done with it, but nothing we can do we have to you know be slow for a week,” Bassam Salah said. Chandler said the deadline for the project to be done is 6 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, but hopes it will be finished by the end of the business day Tuesday, November 25. Gold’s Gym has set up additional parking for its Thanksgiving morning 5K to accommodate all runners in case the project is not finished. Chandler said the city has known this project needs to be done for about two months and said the city is being proactive by completing it before the winter months.
