Caught on camera: Inmate allegedly stabs another inmate

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — An inmate faces additional charges after investigators say he stabbed another inmate. Surveillance video shows James Wynn making a dash into a visitation pod in the jail. Capt. Tracey Grisham said the interaction then turned violent. “He started stabbing,” Grisham said. Investigators said the video then shows Wynn stabbing another inmate with a ball-point pen in the back of the head. “The metal tip was actually removed from the inmate’s scalp,” Grisham said. “It had penetrated the skin and come out of the pen.” The pen Wynn is accused of using is called a “flex pen.” These pens are allowed in jails because they are flexible, making it hard to use them as a weapon. “He had wrapped his flex pen with plastic and labels off of boxes — made it thicker, and it was stiff,” he said. Grisham said it is not uncommon for inmates to get creative. “Inmates who have been incarcerated for a good amount of time, I have seen things they create and invent, and sometimes it will amaze you — the ingenuity they come up with,” he said. Wynn, who is being held on two aggravated assault charges, now faces a third count. His victim was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. Grisham said the fight started after Wynn noticed who was visiting the other inmate. “He’s having a visit with his wife, Wynn’s wife, and yeah, that made him mad,” he said. Investigators said Wynn was originally charged with shooting two people in Lexington last year. The case is still pending. The victim is now out of the hospital. Wynn will be formally charged Tuesday with the new count of aggravated assault.
