Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Cherry

SCOTTS HILL, Tenn.–It’s now time to introduce you to this week’s Educator of the Week presented by the Tennessee Education Lottery. Chris cherry has been teaching agriculture students and Future Farmers of America for 6 years at Scotts Hill High School. “My favorite part about teaching is as an ag teacher I have my students all four years. I have them starting with freshman to seeing them graduate and go off to college. I actually get the opportunity to watch my kids grow up while going through all the changes that prepare them to head out into the real world.” Cherry says. The University of Tennessee at Martin grad says that he is following in the footsteps of his family as well as previous agriculture educators he had in the past. “I’m a fourth generation Future Farmers of America member. So I came up doing FFA at Chester County High School. My adviser was Mr. Richard Karns. Seeing the things he did, seeing how much he helped me, helped students, and the way that he taught. I just wanted to pay it forward and do the same for the wonderful kids I get to teach today.” Cherry says. Cherry says he enjoys teaching agriculture but there can be challenges especially when trying to get the science across to students and even to those in the community. “To get the science across is difficult. I have to stress to my students how much agriculture has changed. How much its going to have to change especially if we approach the food crisis in 2050.” Cherry says. Cherry enjoys seeing his students excel and be competitive. Currently the Scotts Hill FFA program ranks 5th in West Tennessee thanks to their hard work and timely efforts. “The best advice I can give my students is to believe in yourself. I have students all the time where I have to encourage them, you can do this. Its because I believe in them but I need them to believe in themselves.” Cherry says. Cherry will be eligible for the state-wide Tennessee Education Lottery “Educator of the Month” award. To vote for him or any of the other nominees go to seehowitaddsup.com.
