Jackson City Council approves bonuses for workers

JACKSON, Tenn — City of Jackson employees get a nice surprise Tuesday, a bonus added to their checks this Friday. The city council approved the expenditure at their monthly meeting Tuesday morning. Almost 700 Jackson employees are getting the $600 bonus. The bonus is for full and part-time employees who received checks consistently throughout the year. City officials say they are glad they can reward their workers. “We feel that our employees deserve this and we’re in a fiscal capability with the situation with funds coming in from FEMA that we’re able to handle this,” City Recorder for Jackson, Al Laffoon said. The city is due almost $600,000 in FEMA reimbursements from storms in March 2014 and April 2011. Workers told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Tuesday, they were happy when they found out about the bonuses. “It was really exciting, you know? It was my first time ever getting a bonus. My first time working with the city. I was really excited,” Desmond Ingram said. “It’s really nice, and I’m thankful that the council approved it,” Tosh Newman said. “This news was great for us coming down the line, so we’re all very thankful for it.” “I’m just ecstatic about it,” Anita Brooks said. “It will help make my family to have a merrier Christmas.” “It makes me feel grateful. This is the time of the season everybody needs to be grateful for anything that they can get, and this is a great Christmas present,” Sharon Smith said. The bonus does not include elected officials for the city like the city council or the mayor. City officials cannot say if this will be a trend going forward, but said they are glad they could do it this year.
