Man in Jackson court accused of stealing, trying to sell back laptop

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man facing accusations of stealing a laptop computer and then trying to sell it back to the owner was in Jackson City Court Wednesday. Tyler Wayne Banes is accused of taking the laptop, valued at $1,300, from a man who gave him a ride Sunday and later trying to sell it back to the man for $300, according to an affidavit. The alleged victim contacted police around 9 p.m. and said he had picked up a man he did not know at the Jackson Civic Center to give him a ride and later noticed his Apple MacBook Pro was missing from his vehicle, the documents state. Later, the victim contacted the police again and said the man had contacted him and offered to return the laptop for $300, according to the documents. The victim contacted police and a meeting was arranged in the area of First Street, documents state. Banes was then arrested near the meeting place after a brief foot chase, according to court documents. Police say Banes told investigators during an interview he had been in the vehicle with the victim and would return the laptop if the charges against him were dropped, according to the affidavit. Banes is charged with theft of property over $1,000. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
