Man sentenced to 104 years in Jackson shooting

JACKSON, Tenn. — A man was sentenced Monday to 104 years in prison in a November 2013 shooting in Jackson. Four other people also were sentenced in the shooting. The charges stemmed from a Nov. 11, 2013 shooting in which police say shots were fired into a home on Holland Avenue, according to a release from the Jackson Police Department. The home was occupied by four people at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured. Police spotted the car believed to be involved in the shooting shortly afterward and engaged in a case before the car crashed into a pole on Lexington Avenue, the release states. Corey Gray, 28, of Jackson, was found guilty by a jury Nov. 5, according to the release. Gray was sentenced to 20 years each on four counts of attempted first-degree murder and six years each on four counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and one and a half years for felony evading arrest, according to the release. The attempted murder counts were consecutive for 80 years and the employing a firearm counts were consecutive for 24 years, the release states. The felony evading sentence was merged with the other consecutive sentences for the total 104-year sentence. Gray will be eligible for parole after serving 48 years in the Tennessee Department of Correction, according to the release. The four other people also sentenced in the shooting pleaded guilty to avoid trial. Casey Mackey, 21, and Hentrick Long, 19, both of Jackson, pleaded guilty to the same charges and were sentenced to 26 years each, the release states. Each will be eligible for parole after serving 12 years. Keondre Long, 17, of Jackson was charged as a juvenile and transferred to adult court. He pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted first-degree murder and and felony evading arrest, according to the release. Long was sentenced to serve 20 years and will be eligible for parole after serving six years, the release states. Shenequa Ross, 21, of Jackson, pleaded guilty to four counts of facilitation of attempted first-degree murder and felony evading arrest, the release states. Ross was sentenced to serve 12 years. She served one year in jail and was placed on intensive state probation for the remaining 11 years, according to the release. Ross was the driver and was taken into custody after the crash, according to police. Keondre Long was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and transported to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries, the release states. Long was transported to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center after being released from the hospital, according to the release. Gray, Mackey and Hentrick Long were arrested the next day, according to the release.
