TWRA responds to reports of bird illness

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is responding to reports of dead birds across the country, following reports of a disease in eastern and midwestern states that affect birds.

TWRA says the disease causes eye swelling and discharge from the birds’ eyes, and may also have associated neurological symptoms, according to a news release.

These reports have come from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, involving young birds, the release says.

At this time, there are no confirmed reports of the disease in Tennessee, and no reports in humans, poultry or livestock, the release says.

Experts are working to determine the cause of the disease, but have not found signs of infection from known illnesses.

The TWRA is recommending the following:

  • Stop feeding birds and cover bird baths if dead birds are found.
  • Clean up excess feed that has spilled or was put on the ground.
  • Clean feeders and bird baths with a 10 percent bleach solution, rinse with water and allow to air dry.
  • Avoid handling birds unless necessary. Wear disposable gloves if you do. If picking up a dead bird, place an inverted bag over your hand to avoid direct contact.
  • Keep pets, including pet birds, away from sick or dead wild birds as a standard precaution.
  • If you find recently deceased birds exhibiting crustiness, bulging eyes, or neurological issues, please use your discretion to call the TWRA at (615) 781-6500.
