HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — Fire destroyed a historic church in Haywood County early Wednesday morning. Firefighters said the building is a total loss. Wind cut through what is left of Trinity United Methodist Church in the Nutbush community on Wednesday. “The roof was already gone, all the windows was out,” Song Leader Ray Burroughs said. Firefighters say the building caught fire around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday. “You’ll never replace all the memories and the furniture that’s been lost inside the church,” Burroughs said. Members say the church, established somewhere around 1822, is a piece of history. Ken Burroughs married his wife there in 2002. “I’ve lived here for 45 years, so that’s all I know,” he said. “That’s the only church I ever went to.” The fire department said it took crews about two hours to get the fire under control. Authorities said the cause remains under investigation. “It was just a loving church and we gone really miss it til we get it back,” Terry Parks, a member, said. The pastor said they are still looking for a temporary place to meet. Members said they plan to rebuild. “We’re all resilient and we’ll build back,” Burroughs said. The building burned, but the pastor said the church did not. The fire department said no one was hurt.
