Frostbite: Winter weather hazard

JACKSON, Tenn.-In bitterly cold temperatures such as West Tennessee is experiencing, frostbite can be a real danger. The extremely cold temperatures, combined with the wind can cause dangerous wind chill readings, which can lead to frostbite if you are outside for a period of time. Wearing gloves, a hat and layers of clothing can protect exposed skin from the damaging condition. Health experts said your fingers, toes, ear lobes and tip of your nose are most at risk. “It can cause the tissues inside to freeze and form ice crystals, actually in the tissues themselves, because of the cold weather just like anything else would freeze. And if that happens, that can cause damage to the tissues,” said Dr. David James of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Health experts said if symptoms, such as loss of feeling and a white or pale coloring are detected, get medical help immediately!
