JACKSON, Tenn.- The Madison County Sheriff’s Department said they have arrested two suspects who are accused of taking a bank bag from the county clerk’s safe. The sheriff’s department said Ashley Melton, an employee in the clerk’s office, has been charged with theft and tampering with evidence. Madison County Clerk Fred Birmingham said he was made aware of the missing bag on Christmas Eve. “I was shocked. I couldn’t believe someone I worked with and I trusted would violate that trust,” Birmingham said. Birmingham said the bag that was taken contained nearly $4,000 in cash and more than $10,000 worth of checks. “It looks like she wasn’t interested in the checks, she burned them. What she wanted was the cash,” Birmingham said. The sheriff’s department said Brandon Lane has also been charged with theft in the case. Birmingham said Lane was not an employee with the clerk’s office. “You can have all the security measures in the world but things like this still happen,” Birmingham said.
