JACKSON, Tenn. — A Navy captain from West Tennessee holds a new title after a change of command last month. Capt. Jon Rodgers of Humboldt is now the U.S.S. Makin Island’s fifth commanding officer since the ship’s commissioning six years ago. Rodgers took command the day after Christmas. He says it’s humbling and that he wants to say thank you to everyone back home. “You don’t get here without a good foundation of principles and morals, you know, those kind of character traits that you learn from the neighbors and community that you grew up in,” Rodgers said. Rodgers is currently halfway across the globe in the Indian Ocean. He says just a few days ago he had some West Tennessee company when a Milan man visited the ship.
