BROWNSVILLE, Tenn — Friday night, a Homecoming Queen at Haywood High School made history, as the first Homecoming Queen with spastic cerebral palsy according to her mother. Dedra Jarrett is a 16-year-old senior at Haywood High School. According to school officials she is a Bible Club member and school ambassador. She won the Queen title in a landslide vote in a school of about 850 students. Her mother, Goldie Harwell said Dedra was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy at birth, has an intellectual delay, and epilepsy. Despite Dedra’s frequent trips to the hospital Harwell said the teenager is always excited for the what comes next. “I feel that this is truly from God. Dedra is an example that no matter what challenges we may face we all can contribute something,” said Harwell. She said she adopted Dedra from a relative when she was only five months old, and ever since then she has been a blessing to the family. School officials said that Dedra is an inspiring student in their school. “She is a wonderful child. She is extremely well behaved, and she comes from a wonderful family,” said Dr. Jerry Pyron, Haywood High Principal. Harwell said she hopes others will learn from these high schools student, and will not judge others based on preexisting medical conditions.
