JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police arrested a Lane College student Monday accused of having a loaded gun on campus. The college confirmed they suspended the student. Dammarious Clifton faced a judge Tuesday. He is charged with carrying or possessing weapons on school property. Jamar McKenzie, a student, said the incident comes as a surprise. “Usually, you know, we have issues, people fighting and things like that, but nothing as serious as carrying a gun on campus,” McKenzie said. The college said police received an anonymous tip about a student with a weapon. Police said they found Clifton inside the administration building Monday with a loaded semi-automatic handgun and box of ammunition with 37 rounds inside his backpack. “Not only are you breaking the code of conduct at Lane, but you’re breaking the law,” Lane College Chief of Staff Darlette Samuels said. Samuels confirmed the college suspended Clifton. “When you violate the trust and the code at the college, then you lose your privilege of attending,” Samuels said. The college said they partner with the Jackson Police Department. Officers are often seen on patrol driving through campus. McKenzie said he feels safe at Lane, but the incident concerns him. “I don’t really feel safe knowing that there’s a student walking around with a loaded handgun,” McKenzie said. Clifton is also charged with altering an item‘s permanent number, as officers said the gun‘s serial number was filed off. Samuels said the campus did not go on lockdown. Clifton is being held at the Madison County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 bond.
