DYERSBURG, Tenn. — A “warming” shelter opened up, Wednesday in Dyersburg, due to extreme weather conditions. Officials at the Union Mission Shelter said it was open not only to the homeless, but to any other city residents who find themselves without shelter during cold weather conditions. They said they open last year to accommodate citizens during similar situations. “They’ll have their own cots and things to sleep, pillows mattress and things like that,” said Neal Chatham, director. Officials said the present location could accommodate 30-50 people, and they provided hot meals as well. James Day was enjoying one of those meal during lunchtime. He said having this shelter available in Dyersburg could save lives. “I heard about a few people that passed away from the cold,” said Day. Chatham said the surrounding community worked together to help those in need of shelter. “All the police, the fire department, everyone’s on the lookout for people that need to come,” said Chatham. He said during the morning after, he and other employees will talk to the previous night’s occupants on ways to provide permanent housing situations.
