HENRY COUNTY, Tenn — A woman is found dead Wednesday morning on the front steps of her home. Sheriff Monte Belew said Brenda Cox, 64, had taken a fall. “She fell down the steps of the front porch area and we believe that the fall overcame her and she was not able to get back up,” he said. He said even though she fell and was knocked unconscious. If it had been warmer, someone might have found her in time. “Apparently Ms. Cox had attempted to go out her front steps area for unknown reason and she wasn’t properly clothed,” Belew said. It’s the third death in West Tennessee since Monday, the second in Henry County, according to the sheriff. The other was in Shelby County. Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Jeff Tackett said these deaths are proof the cold really is dangerous and kids are the most susceptible. “The big thing is you want to make sure the kids are covered up when they go outside especially any part that sticks out so hands, feet, nose, ears, anything like that,” Tackett said. He said anyone should monitor how much time they are spending outside. “Anything over 15 minutes, you can get some severe frostbite and often times with frostbite you can be pretty significant damage where you can actually lose fingers,” Tackett said. Sheriff Belew is asking everyone to keep an eye on their neighbors until the temperatures warm up.
