LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Lexington High School history teacher Keith Runyon wants his students to succeed and uses his time in the classroom to inspire them. “I try to incorporate all aspects of learning,” Runyon told WBBJ. “I want them to be involved, and I find that the more you allow them to be involved in the learning process the more excited they are about learning.” Runyon believes what he does now will influence his students for years to come, and he tries to reach each student by varying his teaching styles. That includes simple conversation. “I truly believe that this is what God has called me to do — to teach and to have an influence on the next generation,” Runyon said. Runyon’s passion is evident about history, teaching and his students. “I want them to understand that what we are learning applies to their life today,” Runyon said. His positive learning environment keeps students participating. “For them to be able to understand the importance of learning history because we don’t want it to, No. 1, we don’t want to repeat the bad things, but also the things we have done well,” Runyon said. “It’s important to learn from those things and keep doing those things.” Runyon is now in the running for the Tennessee Lottery Teacher of the Month award.
