JACKSON, Tenn. — Winter crews gear up for yet another storm. This time, however, state officials say they won’t be able to get ahead of the messy conditions. “During a storm, if it’s forecasted to start as snow or sleet we can pre-treat the roads, but in this case it looks like it will start as rain,” John Thomas said. By not being able to pre-treat the roads, TDOT workers say they won’t be able to put down brine ahead of time. Brine is a precise mixture of salt and water used to break the bond between ice or snow and the pavement. “During a heavy rain, it will end up washing the liquid off the road, and we can’t use it at that point,” Thomas said Officials say while not pre-treating the roads, they’re instead preparing their trucks and tuning them up so they’re ready to handle the messy conditions. With the system presenting new challenges, officials are asking drivers to be cautious and to pay attention to reports and road conditions before venturing out.
