JACKSON, Tenn. — With the prediction of ice and below freezing temperatures again, many West Tennesseans are rushing to prepare themselves and their homes only to find empty shelves. Rock salt has been flying off the shelves since the area’s last winter storm two weeks ago. Stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s in Jackson say their supplies are gone. “Everybody that’s been coming in to us has told us we’re the only ones who have salt,” said Ginger Kemp, manager at R & J Kemp Supply. Kemp said in the last 24 hours her store has sold around 650 bags of salt. “They’ve all been in wanting to prepare because when it happened two weeks ago salt was hard to find. We almost had people fighting to get salt,” Kemp said. Kemp said since the weekend she has seen 35 percent more customers. Some in the area said they are not surprised that supplies have been flying off shelves. “West Tennessee overreacts. That’s just how people around here,” Michael Zeigler said. Kemp said they have sold out of shovels and plastic sleds.
