JACKSON, Tenn. — The smell of burnt rubber in the air and the sounds of muscle-heavy engines were heard across Jackson. “This is a way for me to get my speed fix without doing anything illegal,” Trae Forsythe said. Forsythe is just one of 28 drivers participating in the first autocross event of the year. “It’s all tight, quick reaction, turns with quick acceleration,” Ben Warren said. Hub City Speed said this is the third year hosting autocross in the area. The object of autocross is pretty simple. All you have to do is get to the finish line as fast as possible without knocking over too many cones. It’s easier said than done though, drivers said. “You got to know what you’re doing. You have to feel your car,” Arnie Gonzalez said. “There is a lot of technique that goes into it, but you know it’s a lot of fun and anyone can do it.” Those with Hub City Speed said you need to be 16 years old and have a vehicle with some tweaked modifications, and you’ll be off racing. Hub City said they have seven more events this year and that safety is their No. 1 priority in each of them. Before each race, every car is inspected to make sure it is safe enough to run the course. Spectators also are looked after, being provided areas for them to safely watch from the sidelines.
