HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — Hardin County cars were trying Wednesday afternoon to make one more pass on a partially covered road before flood waters made it completely disappear. “It came up a foot in just an hour or two, so it can rise really quickly,” Chief Melvin Martin said. Martin, of the Hardin County Fire and EMA, says some roads could be covered with three feet of water by Monday. “There’s a lot of traffic that comes through here,” Martin said. “It’s a shorter route. Everybody likes to take a shortcut.” Between 15 to 20 roads will be affected by the flooding. Martin says that will add up to about 20 miles of closed roads. Residents in the area have been warned by officials to move things in low-lying areas that could be affected by the rising waters. But Martin says they are equipped with rescue boats in case something goes wrong. “We have people drive down here and see the flooded lands, but please be safe and stay off the road if it’s closed,” Martin said. Staying off the road might be the case for weeks in what officials say could be the time it takes for the water to subside.
