JACKSON, Tenn. — A ban on traffic cameras may be one step closer to reality for the state of Tennessee. Wednesday, the measure was placed on the calendar for the Senate Transportation Committee and House Transportation Subcommittee. The bill’s sponsor, State Representative Andy Holt of Dresden, said the proposal is not meant to discredit police officers or promote citizens to break the law. “I want to be clear about this. I’m not encouraging anyone to speed. I’m not advocating anyone to run the red lights,” Holt said. “What I’m advocating for is that if we are going to cite folks for these violations, let’s be consistent, and preferably let’s not utilize these unmanned traffic camera systems in that fashion.” News outlets report 24 towns or cities across Tennessee including Jackson currently deploy cameras, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
