DYERSBURG, Tenn. — History comes alive at Dyersburg High School as a classroom lesson turns into something much more for two high school students. Students said it started as an interview for a history project contest, but after talking to Lt. Col. George Hardy of the historic Tuskegee Airmen, they wanted to share his story with the community. “It’s an eye-opening experience not just for us, but I’m happy we could bring it to the community,” said Maya Harris, one of the students behind the project. Students said the Tuskegee Airmen are known for their patriotism and their fight for equality in the armed forces, subjects the students said fueled their research for this project. “It’s great that the community can learn about this Tuskegee airmen, because they may not have known,” said Logan Miller, who is partnered with Harris on this project. Lt. Col. Hardy said seeing the influence his story still has on teenagers today inspires him. “That’s the part that got me,” Hardy said. “So many people have come out to see and talk and ask questions, and I love to go to schools particularly.” The students said they plan to head to Nashville April 11 for the statewide history competition, and if they win they will go to the national level in Washington, D.C.
