CAMDEN, Tenn. — A Benton County native and long-time West Tennessee radio personality was honored Thursday for his nearly 60 years in local radio. Ron Lane received a Lifetime Achievement Award Thursday night at the Benton County/Camden Chamber of Commerce annual awards ceremony. Lane has been on the airwaves of Camden Radio for more than 57 years, according to the chamber. His career began in the 1950s when he was a student at Big Sandy High School and would call in school news to WRJB and WFWL. Lane also has been a long-time mayor of the city of Big Sandy. Lane was surprised at the awards banquet by the appearance of his friend and mentor Russell Gallimore, a retired United Methodist Church minister who now lives in Jackson. While serving as pastor of Methodist churches during the ’50s in the Big Sandy area, Gallimore recognized Lane’s talents and helped him get a part-time job at WFWL, where Gallimore also worked.
