JACKSON, Tenn. — A well-known media and community leader is celebrating a milestone Wednesday. Doris “Cousin Tuny” Freeman is celebrating her nine decades of life. Family, friends and community leaders gathered at Regency Retirement Village of Jackson to wish Freeman a happy birthday. Freeman says she is excited so many turned out to wish her a happy birthday. Freeman began her entertainment career in the 1930s as a singer and tap dancer on local radio. She created the child-loving “Tuny” character that she would go on to feature on radio, television and in live venues. Over the years, Freeman has raised millions of dollars for charity and hosted more than 70 telethons. Freeman hosted a daily children’s TV show in Jackson from 1955 to 1967 and also headed Cousin Tuny Enterprises, one of Jackson’s first advertising agencies. A single mother of four, Freeman became Jackson’s first female radio advertising representative with WDXI in 1948.
