JACKSON, Tenn. — People around the world celebrated autism awareness day on Thursday. Autism spectrum disorder is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges, according to the centers for disease control and prevention .
Staff at the Star Center said they use this day to remind people that there is help available in West Tennessee for those with autism. “We want people to know that there are people that will work with someone who is diagnosed with autism and there are resources out there,” Joseph McFarland said. Autism Speaks, a U.S. organization that sponsors the research of autism, has been celebrating the global day for six years.
