JACKSON, Tenn. — Many say there are two things guaranteed in life, and one is approaching — tax day. With just more than a week to go until tax returns are due, many West Tennesseans still may not have filed theirs. According to wallethub.com, only 28 percent of Americans wait until April to file their taxes. For those who do, a local certified public accountant said the No. 1 thing to do is get organized. “Once you get organized, then decide if you got enough time to file or if you need to extension,” Fancher Sargent said. “And the important thing to remember is if you need an extension, it’s only an extension of time to file, not time to pay.” Sargent is a certified public accountant and vice president of Cowart, Reese, Sargent, PC. Sargent said it is not too late to hire a professional but to act quickly. He said either your extension or tax returns have to be filed electronically by 11:59 p.m. April 15.
