DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man police say shot a Lane College student on campus appeared Wednesday morning in Jackson City Court, and court documents reveal new details about the shooting and his arrest. Jimtarius Tavon Hampton, 19, was arrested Monday. The judge on Wednesday set his bond at $150,000. Police responded to a reported shooting around 11:45 a.m. April 2 on Lane College campus, according to an affidavit. The shooting occurred during a school day near the school’s cafeteria. When they arrived, police found one victim with a serious gunshot wound to the thigh. Officers also found multiple spent 9 mm rounds in the street near the victim, the document states. School officials previously have said both Hampton and the victim were Lane College students. An eyewitness told police he saw a crowd of men near the corner of Orchard and Laconte streets on the edge of the campus. The witness told police some men ran away from the crowd and that the crowd chased after them, according to the affidavit. He said he then saw one of the men in the crowd pull a pistol and shoot at one of the men running away. The witness later identified Hampton as the gunman, the document states. Hampton is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and carrying a weapon on school property.
