WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — Monday’s overnight storm caused a church’s destruction from multiple lightning strikes, according to firefighters. Dresden Fire Chief Paul Hutcherson said when firefighters arrived around 3 a.m. Monday at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, it already had been engulfed by flames. Hutcherson said the cause was most likely multiple lightning strikes. “I know the church took precautions,” Hutcherson said. “The steeple itself was a lightning rod and was grounded. Sometimes there’s just nothing you can do if you get a direct hit.” Church member Bobby Klutts said he attended the 70-year-old church since he was a child and was heartbroken seeing its ashes. “It’s like part of your life is gone,” Klutts said. “You’ve got a lifetime of relationships and love — then it’s just gone.” Klutts said insurance companies are set to inspect the damages Tuesday, and later in the week church members will meet to plan the future of the congregation.
