JACKSON, Tenn. — A brawl erupted in the cafeteria at Jackson Central-Merry High School. Parents received messages from their students and took to Facebook to voice their concern. One of those parents is Kisha Hudson. “It was more, different groups of kids. One started, and then they’re breaking it up, and then it escalates,” she said. The school district confirmed Thursday there was an incident nine days before on April 21. The Jackson-Madison County School System stated in a release, “After resolution of the conflict by the principal and his staff, several students were suspended and one student was arrested.” Parents said they want more transparency, saying school leaders never told them about this fight or others since. Madison County Sheriff John Mehr, who is in charge of the district’s school resource officers, said no school is immune to conflict. “It’s very common in school for this to happen, and officers are trained to be able to talk to the young people,” Mehr said. Hudson wants more for her son. “We’re just trying to find a way to keep our kids active and keep them on the right track, cause we don’t want some of the things that happened in other cities to happen here,” Hudson said. As a JCM alumna herself, she wants a better reputation for her alma mater. “We have a lot of positives, but of course every school is going to have some bad apples,” Hudson said. Mehr said the only way law enforcement reports these issues is if there is an arrest made in the altercation.
