Program educates citizens to avoid becoming crime victims

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management Agency held a special program Thursday evening for victims of crime. The program, “Refuse to Become a Victim,” sponsored by the National Rifle Association, started as a program for women but has nothing to do with guns and weapons. It presents suggestions for women and their families on awareness guidance and preparedness. It also offers tips on how to make your home safer and tips for when you are traveling alone and while at work. Leaders with the presentation said it is essential for everyone to know how to protect themselves and their families. “There is no real safe space anymore, so people have to make sure they can do it for themselves and we are trying to give them the tools and the ammunition and the information to make it easier for them,” said Marty Clements with the Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management Agency. The program also offered information for senior citizens on how to protect themselves, information about protecting preschool kids and how to protect yourself from identity theft.
