JACKSON, Tenn. — Wednesday marked a special day for school nurses across the country. May 6 is known as National School Nurse Appreciation Day. There are more than 20 school nurses in the Jackson-Madison County School System. This school year alone, district officials say there have been 33,000 visits to a school nurse by students. Officials say without the nurses, getting through the school day would be impossible. “I think it’s a great day to recognize the work that they do when our children are in school and are trying to learn,” Annette Wilson said. “Many of them have many health problems. They wouldn’t be able to attend if there was no school nurse in the building.” School officials say when a nurse is in the building and a child makes a visit, 85 percent of the time the child returns to class.
