JACKSON, Tenn. — The campaign manager for Dr. James Baxter’s run for mayor has asked for a recount. Baxter and Shelia Godwin, his campaign manager, hand delivered a letter from Godwin to the Madison County Election Commission on Thursday asking for recounts of both early and final voting numbers for all candidates. Godwin and Baxter also held a news conference Thursday at the commission to announce the request. Godwin also asks in the letter to address the commission and requests they not ratify or certify results until she has the opportunity to do so and until a recount is completed. Administrator of Elections Kim Buckley told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News her office stands by the results and that there is no provision in the law for a recount. She said they would have to petition a court to make it happen. In the Jackson Municipal Election held Tuesday, incumbent Jerry Gist was re-elected mayor of Jackson for a third term with 5,983 votes, 51 percent, in the final count, according to final unofficial results. Baxter had 728 votes, or 6 percent. Lowe Finney came in second with 4,757 votes, or 41 percent. Tom York carried 1 percent with 129 votes and Charlie Motton .25 percent with 29 votes.
