Chester Co. Fire Dept. gets $80K grant

CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — The Chester County Fire Department got word Friday that they are approved for a federal grant to buy gear. The FEMA grant totals $83,496 and is for buying turnout gear, or protective clothing. Department officials applied for the grant in the fall of 2014, according to the Fire Chief Jim Vest. “Safety is a high priority when FEMA considers funding,” Vest said. “We needed the funds, and thank goodness we got it.” Their current turnout gear is 13 years old, according to department officials. One suit without a helmet costs more than $1,400. Since 2002, the Chester County Fire Department has received $1,629,000 in federal grants.
