Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Vicki DeLoach

JACKSON, Tenn. — Vicki DeLoach is a computer science teacher for Madison Academic High School and is noted as one of their most dedicated educators. She has been teaching for 38 years and has never missed a day of class. “I’m very healthy, and I just don’t think anyone could teach my class like I can,” DeLoach said. Mrs. DeLoach has always wanted to be an educator, but she transitioned to computer science a few years after she began teaching. “Well, I started out in math because I’m from a time before the computers started coming into the schools, but then when I saw computers and started working with them, that’s what I wanted to do,” she said. Now she teaches both application and web design. “They are creating websites for people, and next year we are going to be programming iOS and Android apps,” she said. She believes in her students and wants them to expand their thinking skills. “To me it just means opening up minds and just seeing what they can do,” she said. DeLoach said she wants her students to build the proper skills for the world of technology. “They’re always really excited to do the work, and they’re getting all kinds of certifications that they can use, you know, after high school into college and in the career, so they’re very motivated,” DeLoach said. She said both she and her students are excited about computers, so it makes her classroom fun. “I’m a good cheerleader — they’re the ones that do all of the work and I just cheer ’em on,” she said. DeLoach will be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month Award. To vote for her or any of the other nominees, visit seehowitaddsup.com.
