Man accused of strangling, swinging knife at woman

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man was in city court Thursday to face accusations of strangling the mother of his child and swinging a knife at her. J.L. Sheffield is accused of pushing the woman onto her bed Wednesday before getting on top of her and strangling her with one hand, according to an affidavit. The woman told police she then grabbed a kitchen knife from her dresser and tried to use it to get Sheffield off of her. He is accused of then taking the knife from the woman and swinging it at her, causing a minor cut on her face, the document states. Sheffield is charged with aggravated domestic assault.
