Sheriff’s office warns public to be wary of scams

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Officials believe scammers may be trying to glean bank information or fake IRS payments from residents. Capt. Jeff Fitzgerald of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division recently received an email supposedly from Bank of America. The email contained instructions on updating his account information, including requests for other personal information, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Fitzgerald does not have a Bank of America account or credit card. Deputies also recently were notified of another apparent scam in which a local woman was contacted by phone by someone claiming to be with the IRS. The caller told the woman she’d be arrested by the FBI if she didn’t pay money she was said to owe. The IRS does not solicit money by phone, according to the release. If you are suspicious of a potential scam, call your local law enforcement agency.
