Madison Co. Sheriff’s Office holds public forum

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Just a few miles away from where a body was found on the side of the road in southwest Madison County, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office gathered with residents for a forum in an effort to help reduce crime throughout the area. Dozens showed up at the Madison Hall Community Center to share their concerns on everything from jail overcrowding to recent crimes and burglaries. Sheriff John Mehr also explained new programs his office is implementing, including a restructured patrol division, which will have deputies stationed in different zones around the county. Mehr said he wants the public to be his department’s eyes and ears. “We just want to keep that door of communication between the citizens and us open,” Mehr said. “Overall, we want to learn from them.” Mehr also talked extensively about how his department will be working closely with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for certain investigations, such as the investigation into the body found just down the road from the meeting. The sheriff said they will be holding a number of other community meetings over the next few weeks. The communities of Beech Bluff, Mercer and Pinson are some of the future sites.
