“Relay for Life” Kicks-off 2013 Event

JACKSON, Tenn.- Planners for an annual fundraising event that is almost six month away are mapping out their strategy. Tuesday night, the official kick-off for the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” fundraiser was held in downtown Jackson. Teams have already started signing up to participate by walking during the overnight relay. Organizers said this event not only raises funds in finding a cure for cancer, but also helps cancer survivors to know they are not alone. “If you’ve heard the words, ‘you have cancer’, we want you to be involved. We encourage you to register as a survivor, even if you don’t want to make a big deal out of your case. It’ll be an encouragement to others who are fighting the battle right now,” said Mark McSwain, co-chairman for the Madison County Relay for Life. The organization’s goal is to register more than 160 teams and to raise more than $402,000. Madison County’s Relay for Life will be May 10 and 11 at Jackson’s Fairgrounds Park.
