Man accused of assaulting sleeping man over suspected theft

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man went before a judge Monday on assault and drug charges after an early Sunday incident at a Jackson residence. Steven Brea is accused of attacking a man while he was asleep on a couch and punching him repeatedly in the face, according to court papers. Witnesses told police Brea assaulted the man because he thought he had stolen money from him, documents states. The victim was taken to a local emergency room and then transferred to Regional One in Memphis, according to an affidavit. When Brea was arrested, police say they found 15 tablets of alprazolam in a bag in his pocket, the document states. Brea is charged with aggravated assault and possession of schedule IV narcotics with intent to resell. He is being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
