Man charged in theft of welder from ex-employer

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man appeared Tuesday in Jackson City Court on allegations of stealing a welder from his former employer. Steven Dewayne Cook is accused of stealing a welder valued at $2,000 from S&J Enterprises, his former employer, according to an affidavit. Someone with the business reported the welder stolen June 5 and told police he suspected Cook. The man contacted police again Monday to tell them he had heard where the stolen property might be located. Police met two employees at an address on Daugherty Street where they both identified the stolen welder. Officers went to the Criminal Justice Complex to speak with Cook, who was being held on unrelated charges. Police say Cook admitted to taking the welder because he had a drug problem. Cook is charged with theft over $1,000. His bond is set at $3,000.
