Longer Boone Lake boat ramps, temporary beach proposed

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Valley Authority has plans to extend boat ramps and create a new swimming beach for visitors.

The Johnson City Press reports (http://bit.ly/1IkqKOE ) the federal agency submitted an application to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation asking for a permit for the plan.

The agency wants to extend boat ramps at Devault Bridge, Pickens Bridge and TVA-owned property on Minga Road in Sullivan County. The agency is also seeking approval to build a temporary swim beach at the Minga Road site.

According to the application, the boat ramp and access road extensions could be completed this summer, but the beach may take longer.

The boat ramps extensions would help alleviate limited recreational opportunities this year on the Boone Reservoir, which was lowered in October for repairs.
