Smokies festival honors work of southern Appalachian women
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) – The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is hosting the annual Women’s Work Festival that honors the contributions of the women of southern Appalachia.
The festival showcases the ways these rural women kept their families going in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with demonstrations that include hearth cooking, soap making, corn shuck crafts and sewing.
There will also be exhibits of historic photos and artifacts. And the Davis-Queen house will be open to visitors with an audio exhibit about the last child born there.
The festival takes place on Saturday at the Mountain Farm Museum next to the Oconaluftee (oh-kon-oh-LUHF’-tee) Vistor Center, near Cherokee, North Carolina. All activities are free to the public.
