JACKSON, Tenn. — This week is lightning safety awareness week, and experts say to take heed as soon as you can hear thunder. With Sunday being the official start of summer, experts say this is the time of year when lightning is most frequent. They also want to use this time to educate others about the dangers posed by lightning. “So any kind of late afternoon thunderstorm that you start hearing thunder, you need to realize that as soon as you can hear it, you need to be seeking cover because anytime that you can hear thunder, there is lightning,” said Madison County EMA Director Marty Clements. The National Weather Service says to immediately move to safe shelter when you hear thunder.
