JACKSON, Tenn. — Standing by the Bible or simply believing in love, West Tennesseans are divided on the high court’s same-sex marriage decision Friday. As same-sex couples across the U.S. applaud the high court’s decision for same-sex marriages, some West Tennesseans said they are at a loss for words. “Speechless — I didn’t think that our nation would get there,” Hayley Hickes said. Others said they are excited about the news. “I’m glad this happened, especially in the South,” Keara Blue said. Prior to the Friday ruling by the Supreme Court, 14 states recognized marriage only between a man and woman. Now, the high court says same-sex couples are able to marry in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. “They deserve to be with who they want to be with, marry who they want to marry,” decision supporter Janelle Bush said. “I have no problem, no issue with that.” Some Tennesseans said their friends are ready to get married and finally have their fairy tale ending. “I know they really wanted to get married, but they didn’t have the funds to just go out of state,” Blue said. Others said same-sex marriages go against Biblical principles. “I hate the fact that they’re going against what’s Biblical and what the Lord has ordained it to be,” Latoya Rutherford said. “You can’t help who you love,” Bush said. “You love who you love.”
