NORTH JACKSON, Tenn. – The first day of summer camp is usually met with high emotion. But for kids attending the Memphis Grizzlies camp at Jackson Christian, the excitement level on day two was even higher. “You’re getting to play with the Grizzlies head coach,” camper Callan Hornburger said. “It’s awesome.” It’s a moment Hornburger along with 40 other campers will never forget. Head coach Dave Joerger made stops at only two Grizzlies summer camps. Jackson Christian was one of them. “I don’t get to Jackson very often. I appreciate the opportunity,” Joerger said. “Great group of kids. This thing is going to get bigger and bigger.” Drill instructions weren’t the only lessons shared. Campers wanted to know the coach’s strategy after last week’s NBA draft. “Trying to get the best talent,” Joerger explained about drafting at 25th spot. “Sometimes you’ll take a chance on someone’s ceiling could be higher or you go more safe.” The Grizzlies are coming off their fifth straight playoff appearance. Joerger hopes to see the campers at the arena next season. “I think we have the loudest arena in the NBA. It’s a credit to the work our guys put in or how big of hearts our fans have.”
