JACKSON, Tenn. — After a team prayer, the Lane College football program opened the doors to their new lockers Monday. “The doors and hinges was coming off the lockers. It was badly needed,” Lane College Head Football Coach Derrick Burroughs told WBBJ Monday. Fellowship Bible Church and Architectural Millwork Services in Chester County provided the wood for the lockers. The $80,000 project will end up costing Lane around $17,000. “We saw this locker room with the lockers that were basically falling apart that’d been built back in the 1970s,” executive pastor at Fellowship Bible Church Randy Pierson said. The church is helping pay for the new lockers and assembling all 102 over the next two days. Pierson said being able to bring the community together is what Fellowship is all about. “We’re always looking for opportunities to do this, and when you find the right one it’s real obvious, and this was one of those deals,” Pierson said. Changes like a new locker room may not directly mean more wins for the football team, but coaches and players at Lane College said they like feeling the love from the Jackson community. “Really we have something to play for this year to show our appreciation,” Lane junior Javonte Kelly said. “It feels great to know that we have people behind us.” Other players agree. “It makes us feel like somebody out there in the community is actually with us and believe in us,” Lane sophomore Aaron Thomas said. “We’re going to try our best and work hard to show our token of appreciation.” Coach Burroughs said getting all the help from the community shows how much they care. “They knew that there were kids out there that need it,” Burroughs said. “They didn’t look at the kids’ color. They didn’t look at the fact that Lane is a historically black college. They saw that kids was in need, and man, that’s awesome.” All the lockers should be installed by Tuesday. Fall practice for the Dragons starts in August.
