Madison Co. inmate accused of breaking jailer’s nose

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — A Madison County inmate is accused of punching a jailer in the face and breaking his nose. According to the sheriff’s department, Joseph Woodruff was being escorted from the booking area holding cell to a booking housing cell by jailers. Documents say he became irate and disrespectful, hitting one of them in the face with his fist. The inmate was not in handcuffs. “Idealistically, it would be good if you could always have everybody in cuffs, but as we opened the door, before we could get the cuffs on him he lunged and hit the officer just too soon. We couldn’t do anything about it,” sheriff’s office spokesman Tom Mapes said. Mapes says the inmate was sent to the Tennessee Department of Correction’s facility in Nashville.
